Apple has redesigned all the features of the iPhone widget running iOS 14. Widgets have never been as flexible, affordable and popular as they are today. The current widget system has even adopted a whole new trend in the configuration of the home screen. It goes to the point where people compete to see who will have a better organized and more creative home screen design.
But progress almost always requires sacrifice. Sacrifices that probably weren’t necessary in this case, but Apple decided to make them. Namely one of the most popular legacy widgets, Up Next, has not reached iOS 14. This step disappointed many users because it was one of the most popular widgets in previous versions of iOS.
The purpose of the Up Next widget was to collect basic information about the calendar of the day and make it visible from one place. It contains information about all upcoming events and calendar reminders. And most importantly, you can see when your alarm goes off. This is now impossible without opening an alarm application.
Apple never indicated why it decided to remove this feature under iOS 14. Which, seen from the other side, can be a positive thing, since it is still hoped that the Up Next widget will return in some of the future versions of iOS 14.
Technically, Up Next isn’t really gone, it just changed shape. It is now part of the calendar widget and only shows upcoming events. For reminders you need to add a separate widget. This automatically forces you to use two widgets instead of one.
It’s even worse with fear. Simply put, there is no widget under iOS 14 that displays alarm information. The clock widget displays the time in just one or more time zones. If you need an alarm, you need to open the application.
So there’s really no way to get all this information in one place? That’s not true. However, you can combine different widgets and functions to get the same result as the Up Next widget, but this takes some work and will not be done in one place.
Setting up an alternative to the Up Next widget requires some work. More than it should be, of course. First of all, you need to activate the calendar and reminder widgets to keep you informed of upcoming events and tasks. Yes, you’ll need to use two gadgets, which unnecessarily need more valuable real estate for the screen.
It is just as easy to set up a calendar and reminder widgets. Just go to the widget screen, press Editand press + to add new widgets. I recommend using two small rectangular widgets that you place next to each other to save space.
Now that you’ve got two thirds of the original Up Next widget, we need to move on to perhaps the most important part – alertness.
Use of the health application for alarm
And now comes the tricky part: fear. Simply put: There is no simple widget that tells you when an alarm is triggered in iOS 14, and there is no alternative in the widget section. However, there is a workaround that makes it possible to display the alarm schedule on the screen. But it can be uncomfortable for you.
In particular, you can configure the sleep settings in the health application, and the lock screen is changed to tell you how long it takes for the alarm to go off. Of course you have to set the whole function correctly and the alarm will only appear on the screen while you sleep, so there is no way to check your alarm at all times.
Here’s what you need to do:
- OpeningApple Health.
- Go to overview>Sleep.
- Activating the sleep schedule.
- In sectionFull Image, pressEdit.
- Set the time to sleep and wake up.
- Make sure you have activated theAlarmfunction.
- Set your favourite signal toWake up
Sleep mode is now activated at the set time and alarm information is available on the lock screen. However, when you are in this mode, the iPhone will also turn on the Do Not Disturb and Stop option (you can turn off the Stop in Sleep option of the health application). So if you don’t want them, you have to turn them off manually.
Of course, switching to Apple Health also means you can take full advantage of this feature. Apple Health collects data about your dreams (which can be inaccurate if you don’t sleep at the same time every night) and tells you how much sleep you get. In addition, it is more difficult than usual to change the alarm because you do it through the health application.
If you ask me, after all this trouble you just don’t have an alarm clock on the castle screen. It is easier to open the alarm application and check it yourself, or to remember it and calculate it yourself.
After all the research I’ve done, I still don’t understand why Apple can’t keep the Up Next widget in its original form or just set an alarm timer on the lock screen. Can all this be used to encourage users to actually use Sleep Tracker in healthcare? Probably not. I mean, it sounds like some crazy conspiracy theory, right?
Whatever Apple’s motives, it’s a fact that we can’t control our alarms the way users do on any other platform. Will Apple do something about it? I don’t know, and there’s no indication anything’s going to change in the near future. To make your feelings known to Apple, complain to the Apple community. Who knows, maybe they’ll think about it if we have enough objections.
