The Windows thumbnail function makes it easy to recognize photos and movies by displaying a thumbnail view of the images. People tend to rely on thumbnails instead of common Windows icons to simplify their tasks. Sometimes the thumbnail database may be corrupted, causing the thumbnails to no longer appear in Windows 10.
Image thumbnails in Windows 10 do not appear if they are disabled in Explorer settings. It is also possible that you see an incorrect or damaged thumbnail due to a damaged thumbnail cache. Well, many other reasons can cause problems with displaying thumbnails in a folder.
How to correct thumbnails that are not displayed in Windows 10
You need a thumbnail preview to view your image or video without having to open it separately. A reduced version of an image, called a thumbnail, makes it easy to classify the image without having to remember the name.
You can skip all these benefits if your Windows computer does not display the thumbnails. There is no need to panic about missing miniatures, because we have a list of solutions.
1. Including thumbnails of File Explorer options
Make sure that the thumbnails are not disabled in the file explorer settings. If thumbnails are not enabled in the file explorer, you can see the default icon for this file type.
To activate the thumbnails, open the file explorer by searching in the search menu. You can start it directly from the taskbar if the file explorer is installed there. Then go to File in the menu bar and click Edit Folder and Search Options. For some users, these may be Options or File Manager Options, depending on the version of Windows you are currently using.
You can also type File Explorer Options into the search bar and open File Explorer Options from there.

When the Filemanager Preferences window opens, click the View tab and under Files and folders, clear the Show always, never thumbnails checkbox.
Click Apply and OK.

You can now restart the file explorer and check if the thumbnails are visible in the folders.
2. Clear thumbnail cache
As mentioned above, a damaged or defective cache can cause problems with the display of the thumbnails. You can clear the cache so that Windows can restore it. There are two ways to clear the thumbnail cache in Windows 10, one is via the disk cleanup application and the other is via the terminal’s command line. You can use both methods, depending on your technical knowledge and comfort level.
Use of the Disc Cleaner Application
Open the disk cleaning application by searching the Start menu.

You can now close the disk cleaning window and restart the file explorer.
Use of the command line terminal
Perform the search from the search menu, right-click the prompt that appears in the search results, and choose Run as Administrator.
In the command line terminal, type the taskkill /f /im explorer.exe command and press Enter. Your background may be blank after this command, but don’t panic; it will return to normal once the whole process is completed.
Then execute the following command.
del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%MicrosoftWindowsExplorerthumbcache_*.db
Finally type start explorer.exe and press Enter to execute the command.

Make sure that not displaying the thumbnails in Windows 10 has been corrected after deleting the thumbnail cache.
3. Make sure there is enough space in the system drive
You may experience problems with thumbnails if there is not enough space on the drive where Windows 10 is installed. To check if there is enough space on the hard disk of the system, open the file explorer and navigate to this PC on the left.
Make sure there is enough free space on the hard disk of the system. In most cases this is the C drive.

If the system drive is full, you may need to free up space to repair the missing miniatures. However, if there is enough space on the hard disk of the system, the problem may be due to something else.
4. Malware and virus scanning
If your system contains malware or viruses, the thumbnails may be missing. The virus can damage the thumbnails repeatedly, even if you rebuild the cache, so many users will not see the thumbnails in Windows 10.
You can use Windows Security to scan your computer for malware and viruses. If you don’t find anything during the scan, you can choose the best malware removal software available on the market. If the virus was the problem, removing the virus will fix the sticker.
5. Changing visual effect settings in the performance settings
You can easily solve problems with thumbnail images that are not displayed in Windows 10 by changing the visual effects settings. If the thumbnails are disabled here, you may not be able to see them in your folder. You need to disable the icons and enable the thumbnails in the advanced settings.
Step one: Start the control panel from the search menu.
Step two: In the Control Panel, search for Advanced System Settings in the search box. Then click the Show Advanced System Settings link in the System section.

Close the File Management window and open it again after making the specified changes. This may have solved the problem that the thumbnails are not displayed in Windows 10.
6. From the View menu, select Thumbnail Image.
In Windows 10, many options are available in the Display section. To view thumbnails of photos and videos, you must choose an alternative that supports a thumbnail preview.
Open File Manager in the menu bar, click View and choose one of the following formatting options.

If you select an option other than the above, thumbnails will not be displayed in the folder. After making the changes, restart the File Manager and check whether thumbnails that do not appear in Windows 10 are allowed.
7. Restore file explorer settings to correct thumbnails not displayed in Windows 10
You can restore the missing thumbnails by restoring the file explorer’s default settings. If any problems occur due to incorrect settings, the recovery will solve the problem.
Open the file explorer and browse to file ➜ Change folder and search options. When the folder options open, click the General tab and then click Restore Default Settings. If confirmation is required, choose Yes.

After restoring the default settings, make sure that the thumbnails of photos and videos are displayed correctly in the File Manager programs. If you still see thumbnails that do not appear in Windows 10, see the alternatives below.
8. Switch on window registration miniatures
The registry stores the most important settings in Windows 10. One way to enable thumbnails in the file explorer is therefore to use the registry settings. You must have access to an administrator account to make the changes described below.
Step one: Press the Windows + R key to open Run and type regedit there. Click OK to open the registry editor.
Step two: When the registry editor opens, go to the next path.
Step three: When you reach the indicated path, right-click on the empty field and navigate to the new value ➜ DWORD (32-bit). You can call this DWORD as DisableThumbnails.

Once you have made changes to the registry, close the registry editor and open the file explorer. This may help to correct thumbnails that do not appear in Windows 10.
9. Start SFC scan
The Windows System File Checker (SFC) utility is used to check your PC for damaged system files. This program can also repair damaged files in most cases.
Find the command from the search menu, right-click on the command prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

From the command line terminal, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. For more information about this tool, please refer to the manual of sfc / scannow.
10. Using the DISMUtility
If the SFC has not corrected the thumbnails that are not displayed in Windows 10, you can run the DISM command and use this utility. It analyzes and corrects errors in the virtual hard disk and the Windows 10 image.
Open a command prompt with administrator rights and type the next command in order. After executing each command, press the Enter key.
Disassembly / Online / Cleaning Image / Health check
Dismissal / Online / Image cleaning / ScanHealth
Dismantling / Online / Cleaning / Restoring health
You can now open the file explorer and see whether the thumbnails are visible or not.
11. Troubleshooting software
If you no longer see the thumbnails in Windows 10 after installing the software, the problem may be due to the new software. Sometimes these problems can be caused by software that is not compatible with Windows 10.
Some programs, while compatible with Windows 10, may conflict with your computer’s system files. In such situations, you can uninstall a recently installed application. Similar problems can occur when upgrading your existing software.
Make sure that no problematic software is installed on your computer.
12. Restore default settings to a folder
Sometimes the thumbnails are not visible in a single folder. Well, there may be a problem with this particular folder setting. In Windows 10, you can restore the default settings for these folders.
Right-click on the folder that has problems with thumbnails and choose Properties from the context menu.

13. Implementing changes in group policy
Changing the group policy can help you restore thumbnails that are not displayed when Windows 10 makes a mistake. For Windows 10 Professional and Enterprise versions, it is easy to open and unlock group policies. To access the local Group Policy Editor in Windows 10 Home, you need to perform additional steps.
From the search menu, type gpedit and open the Edit Group Policy in the search results.

Close the Local Group Policy Editor and restart your Windows 10 PC. You can now open the file explorer and check whether you can view thumbnails of images and videos.
14. Creating a new user account
The last solution for not displaying Windows 10 thumbnails is to create a new user account. You can add a new Microsoft account or a local account to your PC and set it up the same way as your current account. This solves the problem for many Windows users.
Adding an account in Windows 10 is easy and only requires a few steps to complete the whole process. You can do this easily by opening the Settings application from the Start menu and going to Accounts.
If you are unsure when adding a new account, you can consult the Windows 10 User Account Management Guide on adding local and Microsoft accounts.
