The denial of access is quite common on Windows 10, and many of us may have had to deal with it. Access may be denied when opening files, folders, notebooks, executable files, or when executing a command on a command line terminal. Some people complain that Windows 10 denies them access when they have access to a certain location or path.

The most common reason for refusing access errors is a matter of ownership, rights and permissions. If you do not have access to a certain file, folder or application, you cannot open it. Sometimes other reasons, such as a damaged hard drive, system files or third party software, can also cause a warning and Access Denied error in Windows 10.

How to correct the access denial in Windows 10

4. Checking for problems with individual drives

Windows 10 users complain that when they open the Images folder, they are denied access. This may be due to certain problems with OneDrive. Such problems may occur if there are problems with the backup or synchronization. Follow the instructions below to fix the problem.

Click the OneDrive icon on the taskbar and then click Help and Settings. Select Settings from the menu that appears.

alt=Open single disk settings width=225 height=378 data-ezsrc= />Open single disk settings

In the settings, check that synchronization and backup are configured correctly. If this is correct and you still cannot access the Images folder, use the controls to reset the access rights to that folder.

Press Windows + R to open the Run command, type cmd there and then press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the command prompt as administrator.

Type the following commands and press Enter after each command to execute it.

Result: DeepL Access on order Rejected

Often an Access Denied error can occur when executing commands. The problem may occur with some commands such as bootrec /fixboot or with all commands. The following list of solutions can help you solve the error that prevents access to commands.

alt=bootrec fixboot access denied 1 width=322 height=48 data-ezsrc= /> access denied when executing commands in command line terminal

1. Execution of the command line terminal as administrator

Some commands require administrator rights. Therefore, if you execute such a command, as the administrator, you must open the command prompt.

Type cmd in the search menu and right click on the command line in the search results. In the shortcut menu, click Run as Administrator.

alt=Run as administrator 8 width=403 height=540 data-ezsrc= data-ez= />Run as administrator

Now execute the same commands and check if the Access Denied error reappears in Windows 10. If this is the case, try the other patches on the list.

2. Verify that the file or folder you have is being used.

It is not only the commands that always give the error message Access denied, sometimes the file/folder you are trying to open with the commands can also cause such errors. This error often occurs because the file and folder you are trying to open with the commands are already being used elsewhere. If you work in an environment where files/folders are shared over the network, you are subject to such errors.

If you work with a computer at home, check whether the file uses an application or software or whether the file is open. You can check all of the above to solve the problem of denying access to jobs.

3. Command terminal in the start menu

Some users may find this solution strange, but it has worked for many users. You can simply add a command line terminal to the Start menu to solve the access denial problem.

Type cmd in the search menu and right click on the command line. Choose Tag to start from the menu that appears.

alt= Enters command line in start menu width=362 height=539 data-ezsrc= data-ezsrc= data-ez= /> Enters command line in start menu

As the administrator, you can now open the command prompt and try to execute the commands to see if everything is working properly afterwards.

Result: C Disk access denied

You may be denied access to the system drive, which can be very annoying because most folders, applications, and files are stored on the C drive. The following solution can help you regain access to an inaccessible drive without any problems.

1. Correct the wrong sector

If there is a corrupt sector in the system drive, an access error may occur. You can run a list of commands to solve the problem. We recommend that you run sfc /scannow first; you can use the SFC utility to help you.

Once the sfc command has been executed in the command line terminal, all subsequent commands can be executed one after the other.

Make sure you open a command prompt with administrator privileges.

chkdsk c: /f/r

alt=runchkdsk command 1 width=437 height=148 data-ezsrc= />runchkdsk command

If the system drive is not in C, you can change the alphabet in the chkdsk command accordingly.

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Close the command line terminal after all commands have been executed. Now try to open the system drive or the C drive and see if you can do this without any warnings or errors.

2. Creating a new local user account

The problem may be related to a corrupt local account; you can try to create a new user account and access the C drive from there. It is easy to create a local user account. Just go to the settings by pressing Windows + I and go to the account settings.

To create a new user account, you must be logged in with an administrator account, as other local accounts are not allowed to do so. If you need help creating a new account, please refer to our User Account Management Guide for Windows 10.

3. Copy the content of the inaccessible player to the newplayer.

If none of the above works, you can copy the content from the old player to the new one. You can use any third party application for this purpose. Since the C is the system drive, you need bootable media. To create bootable media, you can use a third party application to copy your data, or you can use the Windows 10 Media Builder.

Result: Installer access denied on Windows 10

The installation program is an .exe file that must be run in order to install software on your system. Sometimes the installation file can cause problems with denial of access. This can be an authorisation problem or a temporary malfunction.

1. Moving the installation file

If a problem occurs by executing only a specific exe file, it can be transferred to the system drive. Since some applications require the system drive to run, you can copy the entire application folder to the drive where Windows is located.

4. Activate the embedded administrator account

Windows 10 has a built-in administrator account. This account has all rights to the system, more than the administrator account you created. However, it is not enabled by default and you have to do it with certain commands.

Open a command prompt with administrator rights and type grid user. Press the Enter key to execute it.

alt=Net user command width=999 height=240 data-ezsrc= data-ez= /> Run user command

You will see different accounts, as well as an integrated administrator account.

Now run the following command to activate the administrator account.

Network administrator / active:yes

You also need to set a password for this account. Write down the password for later use.

To set the password, type Net User Administrator * and press Enter. Here you have to enter the password twice to confirm it.

alt=Password for admin account width=609 height=176 data-ezsrc= />Password for admin account enabled

You must now log out of the account you are using and login to the administrator account you have just activated. And try to access the installation file from there. Be sure to turn off the built-in administrator account when you have finished installing the application. Leaving it active may increase the risk to your system.

Log back in to your old account and open a command prompt as administrator. Execute the following command.

User network administrator / active:no

alt=Portable administrator account width=723 height=101 data-ezsrc= data-ez= />Portable integrated administrator account

When you see that the command was successful, close the terminal window.

5. Changing user account management settings

You can change the UAC settings to correct denied access in Windows 10. This may be a bit risky for your system, but be sure to undo the changes once the installation file has been successfully executed.

The UAC will inform you of warnings and error messages when you install new software. You must log in with an administrator account to make the changes described below.

In the search menu, type UAC and open Edit User Account Control Settings.

alt=Open UAC width=350 height=571 data-ezsrc= data-ez= />Open UAC

When the user account management settings open, drag the slider to Never Notify and click OK to save it. But before you do that, you need to remember the old settings so that you can easily restore them.

3. Delete desktop.ini file

If you can’t open the notepad only in a certain folder, you can try deleting the desktop.ini file. The desktop.ini file is present in all folders for which you have changed the display settings. So, if you encounter problems after setting the folder view, you can try to delete the desktop.ini file to solve the problem.

Pay attention: It is generally not recommended to delete the desktop.ini file, but technically it doesn’t hurt. If you delete this file, the folder settings will be reset to the default settings. However, we recommend that you delete this file only in the folder you created and not in another folder that contains important Windows data.

The desktop.ini file is hidden by default. Therefore, make sure you go to the Viewing tab in the appropriate folder and check the box next to the hidden items. You can also check the box next to the filename extensions to make it easier to find the file.

Then delete the desktop.ini file and close the folder. Wait a minute, then open the folder again. You may not notice a denial error when you open the scratch block.

Result: Access denied in Windows Update

However, this problem of denial of access is different from the above. Some users have encountered a 403 error: Access denied/banned when accessing the Windows Update website. There are several reasons that can explain these problems when upgrading Windows. As usual:

  1. Problems with your firewall or personal antivirus software
  2. Internet Explorer file damaged, corrupted or missing on a Windows computer.
  3. Incorrect data in the host file
  4. Missing or damaged host file
  5. Windows Update site management is missing or damaged on the PC.

The following solutions will help you solve the problem of denying access to the Windows 10 upgrade site and ensure that the upgrade runs smoothly.

2. Creating a new host file

As mentioned before, one of the reasons for denying access to the Windows Update website is due to a corrupt host file. You can create a new Hosts file and replace it with the old one. Resets the host file to its default value.

Open the Notepad file by searching the Start menu. Then copy and paste the following lines into a new file without a name. Make sure you don’t change the rule and don’t miss a rule.

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.

# This is an example of a HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains a mapping between IP addresses and host names. Each item
# must be registered on a separate line. The IP address must be in the first column
# followed by the corresponding host name.
# IP address and host name must be separated by at least
# a space.
# In addition, comments (such as these) can be inserted on separate lines
# or after the name of the machine indicated by the # symbol.
# Example:
# # Source server

# x Host Client

# The resolution of the localhost name is handled in the DNS itself.
