You can connect external devices such as TVs, projectors and monitors via the included HDMI port on the PC. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) allows you to enjoy clear audio and video on connected devices. However, some problems may prevent HDMI audio from working on the connected external device.

HDMI audio may not work due to outdated or defective drivers. In addition to driver problems, there are other factors that affect audio output: incorrect settings of the connected TV and a damaged HDMI cable. Some programs may not work properly with your computer, so no sound is output via HDMI.

To solve a problem with HDMI audio that does not work

Cable, computer and TV problems can easily be solved with the solutions below. The list of solutions may be a bit long, and that’s because there is no reason for the problems with HDMI audio.

The cause may vary depending on the external HDMI device connected and the PC used, so the solution may also vary.

1. Reboot your PC to

If temporary problems prevent HDMI audio from working, restart your computer to fix the problem. To restart your computer, click the Windows icon on the screen and then click the power button. Now click Restart.

alt=Restart system 4 width=263 height=164 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/25-Solutions-to-Fix-Hdmi-Audio-Not-Working-Issue-In.png />Restart computer

Close all windows and save your work before restarting the system. Rebooting is likely to solve the HDMI audio interference problem.

2. Connect the notebook to the power supply

If you use a notebook to connect to an external device via HDMI, you can connect the notebook to a power source. In many cases, drivers and HDMI services are disabled when the device is operated on battery power.

3. Checking the HDMI functionality of external devices

Most PCs have HDMI capabilities, but older TVs do not. Therefore, when connecting your computer to the TV, make sure that your TV has the HDMI function. You can check this using the instructions supplied with the TV.  If you do not have a manual, you can check it online on the manufacturer’s website using the model number of your TV.

4. Select HDMI as the default audio playback device.

You should check that the connected device is selected as the default playback device. When another device is selected, the audio output is routed to that device and not to the connected device.

Step one: Open the control panel by navigating to the Start menu.

Step two: In Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound and click Sound Settings.

Step three: Now click on the Play tab and make sure there is a check mark next to the connected device. In our case it was a smart TV, it may differ depending on the name of the connected device.

If another device is selected, you can click on the external HDMI device and then click the Set as default option below to set it as the default device.

alt=Select HDMI as the default playback device width=394 height=452 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1609573586_126_25-Solutions-to-Fix-Hdmi-Audio-Not-Working-Issue-In.png />The external HDMI device must be set as the default playback device.

Then restart the computer and check that HDMI audio no longer works.

5. Disconnecting and connecting the HDMIcable

If HDMI audio does not work due to a connection problem, the problem can be remedied by reconnecting the HDMI cable.

Remove the HDMI cable from the PC and the TV or other external devices and wait a moment. You can restart both systems and reconnect the HDMI cable. This eliminates connection problems between the computer and the external device.

6. Use the correct HDMIconnector.

Today’s televisions are equipped with different connections. Be sure to connect an HDMI cable to the correct port. If your TV is equipped with a DVI/HDMI connector, do not use it, only use the HDMI connector.

To view the video and listen to the audio, you must select a connected HDMI slot. Make sure you also choose the right niche.

7. Use a different HDMI connector and cable

There may be a hardware problem causing HDMI audio to not work. You can temporarily use another HDMI cable even if the cable shows no signs of deterioration.

Try using a different HDMI port on your computer and an external device. A port can malfunction and sometimes not work as expected. The use of another port can therefore help to solve the problem that has arisen.

8. Turning off exclusive speaker mode

If HDMI audio does not work on the connected external device, you can temporarily disable Speaker Exclusive mode.

Step one: Open the control panel window and go to Hardware and Sound ➜ Sound.

Step two: In the Play tab, right-click on the speaker/headset and select Properties.
